Introduction to the School of Physical Education, Guizhou University

With a history spanning over 120 years, Guizhou University has maintained a steadfast commitment to physical education since its establishment in 1902. In October 1997, the original Guizhou University merged with the former Guizhou Agricultural College, and subsequently in August 2004, it merged with Guizhou Institute of Technology once again, resulting in the formation of the new Guizhou University. As a result, the physical education departments of these three institutions were amalgamated to establish the Department of Physical Education at Guizhou University. Finally, in 2013, the School of Physical Education was officially established.

Striving for Progress and Development, the Institute of Physical Education currently offers two undergraduate majors, one professional master’s degree program, and one master’s degree program in the secondary discipline of ethnic minority traditional sports (outside the official catalog). The institute boasts a faculty team of 62 full-time members, including 7 esteemed professors, 28 associate professors, and 8 national-level referees. With an enrollment exceeding 500 students, the institute takes charge of developing physical education programs and disciplines while teaching public physical education courses to over 40,000 university students. Additionally, it conducts ‘National Student Physical Fitness Standards’ tests and organizes high-level sports team training sessions as well as competitions. Moreover, it actively engages in extracurricular sports activities. Over the past five years alone, the institute has successfully undertaken a total of 33 research projects at both national and provincial levels. It has been recognized with one first-class major at the national level along with another first-class major at the provincial level. Notably, its students have achieved remarkable success by winning a total of 26 awards in national-level sports competitions while six individuals have earned spots on national teams. Furthermore, the university has received prestigious accolades such as being honored as a National Advanced Unit in School Physical Education as well as a National Advanced Unit in Mass Sports.

Our objective is to establish the institute as a distinguished and preeminent institution in Guizhou, a top-tier educational facility in Western China, an influential hub nationwide for nurturing high-level physical education professionals, and a renowned research center for traditional sports among ethnic minorities.
